Summer Scent
Reed Schick (American, b. 1997)
35mm Photographic Book and Digital Slideshow, 2019
Summer Scent is a project that explores photography's promise to arrest a fleeting moment. Using dozens of disposable film cameras to capture moments with friends and family, Schick accepts the limitations of the simple, cheap cardboard camera. The resulting images - usually grainy, often lit by abrupt flash or smeared with moving bodies - take on a new life as both light and paper. The images become monumental: makers of the unheroic moments that comprise most of our lives.
